Uniformed police not welcome in Calgary Pride parade

CALGARY, ; SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 -- Almost everyone was waving rainbow flags on ninth ave. helping to celebrate 25 years of Pride Parades in Calgary on September 6, 2015. There were 120 entries in the event which almost matched Vancouver with their 150 entries. Also on hand Mayor Naheed Nenshi, the Canadian Olympic Team, Calgary Flames, Calgary Roughnecks, Calgary Stampeders, and Calgary Inferno, as well as Dykes with Bikes, and Calgary Transit with their Ride with Pride Rainbow Bus. As Calgary’s police chief expressed disappointment at being told his officers would not be welcome to march in uniform at this year’s Pride parade, a city councillor and former police commissioner announced she would boycott the event.

In a statement released Wednesday, Calgary Pride encouraged police officers to participate but to do so without uniforms, firearms, vehicles or any form of institutional representation, such as floats, adding that completely banning law enforcement deters from meaningful discussions on how those agencies can best support the diverse community.
