The future of New Zealand’s largest LGBTI parade, Auckland Pride, is in question amid dramatic fallout from a decision by organizers to ban uniformed police.
Organizers said some LGBTI community felt unsafe around uniformed police and banned them from the 2019 parade.
The march is scheduled to take place along Ponsonby Road on 16 February next year.
Auckland Pride said police ‘do not currently meet the degree of safety and awareness of intersectionality required by our rainbow communities’.
Since then, the New Zealand Defence Force pulled out of the parade in light of the decision. Police minister Stuart Nash said he was ‘extremely disappointed’.
Furthermore, corporate sponsors Vodafone, Westpac bank, Bank of New Zealand, ANZ have all distanced themselves from the parade over the anti-police stance.
