At a reception held at Toronto’s Albany Club on February 21, LGBTory Canada conferred its first annual Outreach Award on MPP Patrick Brown, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario (PCPO). The award was given to Mr. Brown as recognition of his historic outreach to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) community of Ontario and his outstanding efforts to promote equality and inclusiveness.
LGBTory Canada is a network of LGBT conservatives that advocates for LGBT issues in Conservative political parties and works to represent Conservative parties in the LGBT community. LGBTory Canada believes in the principles of “big tent” progressive conservatism and supports politicians and parties that uphold the Canadian values of inclusiveness and diversity and welcome people from all backgrounds. The inaugural Outreach Award is given to Patrick Brown, whose outreach to the LGBT community of Ontario embodies these ideals.
Since becoming leader of the PCPO, Mr. Brown has been vocal and visible in his support for LGBT Ontarians. He showed his support by marching in Toronto’s Pride Parade in 2015 and 2016 and by unequivocally voicing his support for same-sex marriage at the PCPO General Meeting in 2016. His continued support as PCPO leader was a significant help to successful efforts to remove exclusionary language related to same-sex marriage from the Conservative Party of Canada’s policy declaration at the party’s 2016 convention in Vancouver. In 2016 he also publicly supported pro-LGBT changes to the Ontario sex education curriculum and voted in favour of Ontario’s Bill 28, the All Families Are Equal Act, which made important changes to Ontario family law that protected the rights of same-sex couples and their children.
More than any other Conservative Party leader, Mr. Brown has made continued efforts to make LGBT people feel welcome in the PCPO and to make the party a more open and diverse option for conservative LGBT voters. LGBTory Canada is pleased to present him with our first Outreach Award.
